Welcome to the Graduate Horizons Program! We invite you to explore our website, review our materials, and learn about our pre-graduate and professional school workshop for American Indian, Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian, and First Nation aboriginals of Canada. Graduate Horizons is a 72 hour "crash course" for Native American college students, master's students, and college graduates in preparing for graduate school (master's, Ph.D. or professional school). Faculty, admissions officers and deans from a selection 40 graduate and professional schools and representing hundreds of graduate disciplines work will help students:
  • Select suitable graduate programs to apply to and consider potential career paths
  • Complete quality applications and resumes
  • Write effective statements of purpose and memorable personal statements
  • Receive test-taking strategies on the GRE, GMAT, LSAT, MCAT
  • Learn how to finance your graduate education
  • Explore special issues and strategies for Native students' success in graduate school
  • Develop relationships and network with faculty and student professionals
Whether you are a freshman/sophomore in college and undecided about what graduate programs or career to consider, or whether you are a college graduate who has been "out of school" working for 3-10 years - the Graduate Horizons curriculum can meet your individual needs. 

Application Period: The 2009-2010 application period is open from October 5, 2009 - May 1 2010. Applications must be submitted before June 1, please contact the office to find out if space is available.
Program Dates: Graduate Horizons is proud to partner with the Arizona State University - the host site of the 2010 summer program!
  • GH at Arizona State University - July 17- 20 (Sat-Tue)
The workshop is 4 days long (Sat-Tue) and consists of 75-90 students. Students are required to participate for the entire program. late arrivals or early departures are not allowed.

Deadline: Application are to be received by February 1, 2009 (1st round); and the second round of applications are to be received by February 26, 2010. All materials must be mailed in 1 envelope no faxes are accepted. Applications must be received before June 1 on a space available basis, please contact the office after May 1 to find out space is available. 

Application Parts: A completed application consists of the following:
  • Student Application with short answer and personal essay
  • Resume
  • Faculty recommendation
  • Professional or Personal recommendation
  • Transcript(s) (copy of unofficial transcript is accepted)
  • $10.00 Application procession fee (non-refundable)
  • $50.00 Deposit (refundable).  The deposit is refundable if the student is not admitted to the program.
  • Please make checks/money order payable to College Horizons. Payments by credit cards are not accepted.
Cost of Program & Airfare: The total program cost is $200.00 and includes tuition, room (linen/towels), meals, ground transportation, and all materials. Participants are also responsible for their own transportation to the host campus, either flying or driving. A $50.00 deposit is due at the time of application.  The remaining $150.00 is due by April 15, 2010. Please make checks/money order payable to: College Horizons. Payments by credit card are not accepted.

Financial Aid: Substantial scholarship financial aid is available for both tuition and airfare travel assistance. Participants must apply for financial aid on their application and must provide a copy of your most recent tax returns and income information.  It is recommended that students apply by the February 1 deadline if they are requesting financial assistance.

Cancelation Policy: If a student notifies College Horizons of their withdrawl from the program before May 1, 2010, their deposit will be refunded only if a wait listed student can take their place. If a student receives a travel scholarship wand withdraws from the program after a ticket has been purchased, the student is responsible to pay the cancelation fee of the ticket and reimburse College Horizons for the cost of the ticket. If a student does not show up to the program, their deposit and program fee are not refundable.

Eligibility: To be eligible, each student must,
  • Be American Indian, Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian, or First Nations/Aboriginal/Metis AND provide appropriate tribal/ancestry documentation (copies of relevant tribal enrollment forms or descent documentation issued from a state or federally recognize tribe, or verified Hawaiian ancestry documentation such as required by the Kamehameha Schools, or from the Ho'oulu Hawaiian Data Center, or birth certificate showing Hawaiian descent);
  • Be a current college student or master's student or college graduate;
  • For those students applying for financial aid scholarship (tuition or travel assistance), a copy of your tax return and income information is required;
  • Submit a completed application packet by the established deadlines.
